German parents post baby on eBay for 1 euro

BERLIN – Authorities in southern Germany said Saturday they have taken custody of a 7-month-old boy after his parents posted an ad on eBay offering to sell him for one euro, the equivalent of $1.57. Peter Hieber, a spokesman for police in the Bavarian town of Krumbach, said the baby was placed in the care of youth services in the southwestern Allgaeu region, although the child’s 23-year-old mother insisted the ad was only a joke.

Authorities have launched an investigation into possible child trafficking against the baby’s mother and 24-year-old father, neither of whom was identified.

“Offering my nearly new baby for sale, as it has gotten too loud. It is a male baby, nearly 28 inches (70 cm) long and can be used either in a baby carrier or a stroller,” police quoted the ad as reading.

No offers were made for the child in the two hours and 30 minutes the ad was posted on Tuesday. EBay later deleted the posting, but assisted police in tracking down the parents.

Several people who saw the ad alerted police.

14-year-old boy dies after being shot

PACOIMA – In one of the last photos taken of Alejandro Villa before he was shot to death less than a block from his home, he is smiling, sitting in the back of a limousine.
The snapshot is from a quinceañera, where the 14-year-old boy danced so much and had such a good time that he promised to dance more often, his sister said.
And for months, he had been telling his mother he was going to stay out of trouble. He even had joined a boxing class through the gang intervention group Communities in School.
But Alejandro teetered on the edge, sometimes mixing with the wrong crowd. And in the end, his words to his family weren’t enough.
Around 8:30 p.m. Monday, the former Charles Maclay Middle School student was shot in the back after a fist fight between two groups of teens at Van Nuys and Glenoaks boulevards.
It’s unclear what prompted the fight, but as it broke up, someone fired a shot, said Detective Heather Gahry of the LAPD’s Foothill Division. Police are investigating the crime as gang-related.
“I am so sad,” said his sister, Nelly, as crowds of middle-schoolers gathered outside the family’s cramped two-bedroom apartment near the scene. Alejandro’s father stood off to the side, his eyes misting with tears.
“He was trying not to worry my mom. He would be calling her and telling her where he was,” she said. “When it was late she would go out and look for him. She did so much for him.
“Nobody has the right to take someone’s life.”
But in this part of Pacoima, residents say violence and gangs are part of everyday living.
“I used to tell him, ‘Be careful. There are a lot of enemies out here,” said Aldo Gutierrez, 18, who often saw Alejandro hanging out in front of Las Palmas, the tattered apartments where he lived with his family, or at the boxing gym.

Gutierrez, whose apartment faces the sidewalk where Alejandro was killed, said he understands how easy it is for a kid to get swept up by Pacoima. He left town after one of his good friends was killed near his home.

On Monday night, Alejandro’s dad, who declined to comment, had run to where his son lay on the sidewalk and held him in his arms as he took his final breaths, said Blinky Rodriguez, Communities in Schools president.

Tuesday afternoon, a trickle of students arrived at a makeshift memorial with flowers and a poster board reading “Slash,” Alejandro’s nickname, in blue ink.

Many of them knew Alejandro, even though he recently had been kicked out of school for fighting, his sister said.

Communities in Schools officials came to talk to the students and the family, offering support and doing what they could to prevent another teen from dying too young.

“He was a good kid with a good heart,” Rodriguez said. “But he was vacillating with which way he wanted to go with his life.”

Police say they have discovered 300 dead cats stuffed into freezers at a man’s Sacramento home.

Animal control officers also removed 30 live cats from 47-year-old Michael Louis Vondueren’s home over the weekend.

Vondueren was arrested on suspicion of possessing an automatic weapon and obstructing police officers. Animal control officers also are considering issuing citations.

Authorities say three freezers were crammed with dead cats and the house was littered with cat feces. Police say Vondueren’s 81-year-old mother also was living at the house.

Drug bust nets 100 at San Diego State

Nearly 100 people, most of them students, were arrested in an undercover drug investigation at San Diego State University that began after a student’s fatal cocaine overdose last spring, authorities said Tuesday.

Authorities seized several guns, at least $60,000 in cash, marijuana, psychedelic mushrooms, hash oil, methamphetamine and illicit prescription drugs, authorities said. Two kilograms of cocaine and 350 ecstasy pills also were seized, officials said.

Eighteen students were arrested Tuesday when nine search warrants were executed at various locations, including fraternities, said Jesse Rodriguez, San Diego County assistant district attorney.

About 75 students faced charges. Those arrested included a student who was about to receive a criminal justice degree and another who was to receive a master’s degree in homeland security. Some defendants were scheduled to appear in state court to face charges Tuesday.

During the probe, dubbed Operation Sudden Fall, more than 130 undercover drug buys were made at locations including fraternity houses, student parking areas and in student dormitories, authorities said.

University police and federal drug agents worked together in the investigation, which was inspired when a student overdosed on cocaine in May 2007.

San Diego State is one of the largest schools in California’s state university system with about 34,000 students. The campus has an active network of fraternities and sororities.

California teen gives birth in shower, walks to hospital

LONG BEACH, Calif. – A 17-year-old girl gave birth secretly at home, then walked four blocks to a hospital with the baby still attached by its umbilical cord. “I was just a little nervous” when the labor began, Xochitl Parra said Friday from St. Mary Medical Center as she cradled her 8-pound, 3-ounce son, Alejandro.
The boy was normal and “eating like a champ,” said Dr. Jose Perez, director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
The teenager said she was alone and taking a shower around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday to get ready for school. Then the contractions took over.
“I felt his head coming, so I sit down and pushed so he could come out,” she said.
Parra did not call 911 because the home phone was disconnected, and she did not want to wake the neighbors because it was so early. Instead, she wrapped the baby, got dressed and went to the hospital on foot.
“I started walking and jogging to the hospital,” she said.
The teen came into the hospital lobby and asked for help, Perez said.
“She still had the placenta and the baby was still attached, so of course everyone said, ‘Don’t move!’” he said.
Perez praised the girl for taking quick action.
“They could have bled to death; thank God that didn’t happen,” the doctor said. “She was very clever. She knew what to do. She wrapped the baby up and walked over here.”
Parra, a sophomore at Long Beach Poly High, said she had kept her pregnancy a secret because she was afraid her mother would “kick me out of the house.” Her mother has now accepted the situation and is going to help the teen care for the baby so she can continue attending school, Parra said.
Perez called the outcome “heartwarming.”
“We hear so much negative with teenagers throwing their babies in the Dumpsters,” he said. “This baby is fine, and hopefully there will be a happy ending with the extended family.”

Mariah Carey’s perfomance on GMA was a sight to behold

•April 27, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Mariah Carey performed on Good Morning America this morning as part of their Summer Concert Series and things went horribly wrong. During her rendition of “Touch My Body”, her backup track started too early. Mariah tried to ad lib and catch up until they fixed it. But, wait. The hijinks didn’t end there. In the middle of the performance her backup singer started singing her part. Mariah Carey turned around and sang “stop singing my part now baby” to the girl. Also, I’m pretty sure after the show, Mariah Carey had to “slap a ho.” Not sure what that means, but it doesn’t sound too pleasant for that backup singer.

amy winehouse made headlines again yesterday by headbutting a guy trying to help her into a cab. Amy promised to turn herself in to be questioned about the incident, but she went to visit her goddaughter instead.

That probably wasn’t the smartest thing to do because today the 24-year-old singer/songwriter/billy goat was “arrested on suspicion of assault after attending a central London police station by appointment.” However, doctors deemed her unfit to be interviewed.

*omg* girlicious finale

•April 27, 2008 • Leave a Comment

robin antin made the dreams of four young female hopefuls a reality when judges Robin Antin, Lil’ Kim and Ron Fair announced them as members of the newly formed recording group, Girlicious, on the season finale of The CW’s music/reality series last night.

Tiffanie Anderson, 18, of Los Angeles, California; Nichole Cordova, 18, of Houston, Texas; Natalie Mejia, 19, of Diamond Bar, California and Chrystina Sayers, 20, of San Diego, California beat out thousands of girls to become part of Girlicious. Originally, Girlicious was planned as a three-person group, but judges decided the four finalists were so good together that the group was expanded. Signed to Geffen Records, the girls have already recorded their first album and filmed their first music video. The group’s first single and music video, “Like Me,” made its world premiere following the airing of the finale episode. Though the reality show recently ended, the girls have been recording their debut album, “Girlicious,” since fall of 2007, which is scheduled to drop on July 1.
